Your rights

Under the GDPR, you have the right to:

request access to the personal data we hold about you;
request correction of inaccurate data;
request erasure of your data;
request restriction of processing, or object to it;
request a copy of your data in a portable format; and
withdraw consent at any time, for anything based on consent.

You can also lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority. In Austria, this is the Österreichische Datenschutzbehörde.

Hosting and server log files

This website is served from web hosting infrastructure. Each time a page is accessed, the hosting provider's servers may automatically record technical data such as IP address, date and time of access, requested page, browser type, and referring website, for the purpose of operating and securing the service. This data is not combined with other data sources.

Cookies and local storage

Necessary. Logging in uses session cookies (issued by auth.marknarain.com) required to keep you signed in. Your theme choice, menu position, and scroll position are saved in your browser's local storage to remember your preferences. These do not require consent, since they only support features you actively use.

Optional. Analytics cookies (see below) are only set after you actively consent. You can change your choice at any time using "Cookie Settings" in the footer of this site.

Analytics

This site uses a self-hosted installation of Matomo (analytics.marknarain.com) to understand how visitors use it. Matomo runs on infrastructure controlled by the site operator; no analytics data is passed to third parties such as Google. The tracking script only loads after you consent via the cookie banner or cookie settings panel. Data collected may include pages visited, device and browser type, referring website, and an approximate location derived from your IP address. IP anonymization is enabled in our Matomo configuration, so your IP address is shortened before being stored.

Accounts and authentication

If you create an account to comment or subscribe to the newsletter, we store your email address, a securely hashed password, your display name, and, if provided, a profile image. This data is used only to operate your account and is never sold or shared with third parties. You can review, change, or delete this data at any time from your account page.

Comments

When you post a comment, your name, optional profile image, and comment text are stored and shown publicly beneath the relevant article or project. Your email address is stored but never displayed publicly; it is used only for moderation and, if you opt in, reply notifications.

If you subscribe to the newsletter, we store your email address (and name, if provided) to send occasional updates about new projects and articles. You can unsubscribe at any time from your account page or via the link in any newsletter email.

Amazon affiliate links

The Reading List page contains affiliate links to Amazon. If you follow one of these links and make a purchase, Mark Narain Enzinger may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. Once you leave this site, Amazon's own privacy policy and cookies apply.

Embedded YouTube videos

The Music page embeds videos using YouTube's privacy-enhanced youtube-nocookie.com domain, which limits cookie use until you actively play a video. Once you interact with an embedded video, YouTube (Google Ireland Ltd.) may process data according to Google's own privacy policy.

Changes to this policy

This privacy policy may be updated from time to time to reflect changes to the site or to legal requirements. The version published here always applies.
